Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Recreation Facilities, the Custodian is responsible for general cleaning duties, pool maintenance, completion of minor repairs and the collection and removal of garbage and recycling within a recreation multiuse facility.
The Custodian performs cleaning and maintenance of all areas of the facility including aquatic center, fitness area, gymnasium, meeting rooms, office area, washrooms/showers/change room facilities, entrance ways and areas surrounding the building and other areas as required.

Responsible for general cleaning duties such as mopping, sweeping, dusting, operating floor care machines and vacuums, shoveling, cleaning windows and other cleaning duties as assigned

Responsible for water testing and pool monitoring as well as HVAC system, pool equipment and pool deck maintenance

Regularly maintain exterior grounds, pick up garbage, remove waste from bins for disposal and ensure entryways and approaches are clear (including snow removal)

Provide courteous and professional customer service

Secure entrances to the facility and monitor building alarms

Responsible for room set-ups, dismantling and clean up

Complete small repairs and maintenance in the building such as painting, changing light bulbs, tubes and ceiling tiles

Use initiative to identify cleaning needs and cleaning improvement opportunities

Assist in inventory control and general auditing of equipment within facility

Ship and receive supplies and equipment, assist in ordering supplies and re-stocking items

Participate in emergency planning activities as required

Participate in training and department meetings

Demonstrate and act in a safe, efficient and respectful manner at all times, ensuring proper safety procedures are followed to ensure accident prevention and health and safety responsibilities are fully met by self and others

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications, Competencies

High School (Grade 12) diploma or equivalent

1 year experience in pool operation and maintenance or custodial services using a variety of cleaning equipment, such as floor machines, brooms, mops and vacuums

Current Standard First Aid certification

Knowledge of workplace safety standards, the Occupation Health & Safety Act and W.H.I.M.S

Successful candidates would be required to successfully obtain the Certified Pool Operator certification within six (6) months of starting in the Custodian position

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

Good mechanical aptitude and knowledge of general maintenance and housekeeping concepts and practices.

Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to follow health and safety practices

Demonstrated communication, organizational and time management skills as required to complete duties

Excellent customer service skills

Ability to understand work orders and instructions

Basic knowledge of MS Office Suite - Outlook, Word and Excel

Ability to work independently with little supervision as well as with a team

Ability to perform the essential duties of the job such as bending, climbing, lifting and operating cleaning equipment

Work locations and shifts may vary depending on demand

Able to work day and evening shifts in a seven day week operation

Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check, including vulnerable sector check.
