Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Energy & Asset Management, the Building Technologist is responsible for building automation and analytics strategies that support safe, efficient operation and maintenance of City owned facilities. This role will adjust and monitor the Building Automation System (BAS) and other platforms, expand the use of analytics and technology, and monitor energy usage for a portfolio of buildings. Work will also include tracking energy costs and savings, energy modelling, generating reports, applying for incentives from utility companies, supporting utilities consumption and carbon emissions tracking by department, feasibility analysis, and assisting with energy retrofit projects. The Building Technologist will also support various initiatives as part of the implementation of the facilities energy and asset management program, including ongoing planning for the transition of facilities to Net Zero Energy.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Continuous monitoring of the corporation’s BAS as well as identifying, reporting, and supporting remediation of equipment failures

Adjustment of building lighting and heating and air-conditioning schedules to optimize occupant comfort, energy usage and costs

Administration, monitoring, analysis, and coordination of maintenance and/or expansion of other building system platforms including City Hall Illumination, solar photovoltaics (PV) and electric vehicle charging stations

Auditing of building systems and equipment using data loggers, sensors, power meters, infrared thermography, etc. and report on findings

Optimize the use of fault detection diagnostics, alarms, analytics, and other technology for various building system platforms

Track and analyze energy consumption data and draft internal and external reports, including annual reports required under the Green Energy Act or other legislation

Create and present business cases for equipment upgrades and other energy retrofits based on life cycle costing, available incentives, and potential emissions reductions

Measure and verify savings achieved through energy retrofits and other corporate energy management initiatives

Perform facility audits and create/update energy and asset models for various commercial facilities aligning with corporate priorities

Research to identify available incentive programs relevant to work of the department and support for processing of applications

Other energy and asset management duties as assigned

Qualifications, Competencies

3-year advanced diploma in Instrumentation or Energy Systems Engineering Technology (Electrical /Mechanical) or equivalent

2-3 years’ experience in facility energy management, controls, energy systems, and building automation systems (BAS); including use of a variety of building automation and control platforms (e.g. Siemens Desigo, Johnson Control Facility Explorer, Metasys, etc.), preferably in a government or institutional environment

1 year experience in asset management for commercial/institutional facilities an asset

Experience writing and presenting technical reports an asset

Experience and certification in use of non-destructive measurement and verification equipment such as data loggers, power meters and infrared cameras an asset

Experience in delivering energy conservation and demand management measures for commercial applications an asset

Experience with energy efficiency and renewable energy project modelling software such as RetScreen Expert and PVsyst an asset

Experience working in heritage buildings an asset

Member of OACETT in good standing with the ability to obtain a CET within one year of employment

Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity, and Teamwork

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

Proficiency in AutoCAD an asset;

Understanding of building systems and ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings (especially HVAC, controls, lighting, electrical, building envelope);

Understanding of municipal requirements under Ontario Regulation 507/18 an asset;

Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex building system problems, analyze potential corrective options, and make recommendations to support effective solutions;

Ability to make informed decisions with technical information, while balancing multiple priorities and risks;

Understanding of facility asset management and lifecycle analysis principles associated with various building systems (i.e. mechanical, electrical, HVAC, building envelope, etc.) an asset;

Strong presentation skills, verbal and written communication abilities, customer service and interpersonal skills;

Excellent organizational and time management skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks in a dynamic work environment;

Commitment to ongoing learning, development and knowledge sharing;

Able to perform the essential duties of the job such as accessing rooftops and equipment rooms, auditing building spaces and grounds;

Proficiency in computerized system applications including Microsoft Office, (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project), RETScreen Expert, Asset Planning and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software;

Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check (CPIC).
