Position Summary

As Assistant Supervisor, Buildings and Properties you will report directly to the Supervisor of Buildings and Properties, Facilities Management and Construction Services;

Extensive trades’ knowledge, planning and scheduling experience will be necessary for success in this role;

Responsible for the delivery of maintenance services for the City of Kingston owned and operated facilities and properties including managing minor capital projects, and material procurement;

You will perform a variety of duties and tasks in the day to day operation of FMCS, providing leadership/supervision and training to staff, and ensure a respectful, healthy and safe work environment; including Occupational Health & Safety Act, and other related acts and regulations;

Lead in the development of facility specific routine Proactive, Predictive, Preventative Maintenance plans/work orders and calendars through the use of CMMS/Microsoft software applications;

Assist in the oversight of contracted activities such as snow removal, grounds keeping, small projects and routine maintenance, (e.g. water management, elevators, fire systems inspections, designated substance investigations development etc.);

This position will require a strong customer service focus, while working to develop and maintain positive relationships with all departments requiring services from FMCS;

Assist in the procurement process including meeting vendors at site locations for the purpose of allowing the access to facilities in the preparation of quotes and estimates and service delivery;

Assist in prioritization, planning, and scheduling maintenance tasks and coordinate material orders and service delivery to facilities;

Assist in performing simple root cause analysis and reporting where deficiencies are identified.

Qualifications, Competencies

Post-Secondary Education in a related field;

A Trade Certificate of Qualification in HVAC, Plumbing/Piping, Electrical, Millwright or similar trade discipline;

Five years’ experience working as a certified trade including experience in a computerized managed maintenance facility, with experience in Planning and Scheduling;

Experience in a municipal environment is preferred;

Preference will be given to candidates having leadership experience in a unionized environment;

Must demonstrate corporate competencies of Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity and Teamwork.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

Strong computer skills; Word, Excel and Outlook and knowledge and experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems applications;

Strong interpersonal and communication skills combined with the ability to perform and prioritize well in a busy and sometimes stressful environment;

Strong knowledge of municipal policies, procedures, by-laws and other applicable legislation;

Proven trades understanding of equipment operations and routine maintenance, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, plumbing, piping, mechanical, architectural/carpentry, electrical and facilities operating systems;

Excellent organizational skills and ability to perform tasks without supervision;

Excellent public relations, customer focus and leadership skills;

Demonstrate integrity, diplomacy and understanding of confidentiality and privacy issues;

Excellent troubleshooting/problem solving and analytical skills;

Able to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently;

Ability to think creatively combined with an eagerness to learn new skills;

Ability to read, understand and apply technical manuals, standards and policies;

Must possess and maintain a valid class G driver’s license with a satisfactory driving abstract;

Ability to work irregular hours and shifts when applicable;

Ability to meet physical demands of the job (e.g. prolonged standing, walking, may be required to occasionally work in extreme temperatures and in inclement weather);

Provide coverage at all areas of responsibility through the utilization of trades skills in the field and participate in the On-Call process;

Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check), at candidates own expense.
