Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Public Works, the Driver Trainer will be responsible for the coordination, implementation and review of the corporate operator training including extensive heavy equipment operator training and testing, vehicle and equipment safety programs and training within the varied Departments of the Corporation;

Promote the development of quality assurance programs and train or facilitate training;

Monitor, assess, test and upgrade operators to properly and safely operate the full range of City equipment including but not limited to heavy trucks and equipment, transit buses, waste collective vehicles, snow and ice control vehicles and safe driving practices;

Liaise with Fleet Division to provide input into new vehicles specifications from the safety and legal aspect and pre-delivery inspection for new equipment and recommending modifications for safety and ergonomics, as well as resolve employee concerns and/or vehicle safety complaints from the operator’s perspective;

All other duties as assigned by Supervisor pertinent to this position.

Qualifications, Competencies

Grade 12 Diploma with a Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience as an Equipment Operator Trainer;

Extensive knowledge on heavy equipment operation and training;

Certification to conduct Provincial Drivers License and Provincial Air Brake upgrades;

Fleet Driver/Trainer Certificate – Ontario Safety League or equivalent;

Vehicle Accident Investigation Certificate;

Professional Drivers Improvement Instructors Certificate (current);

Defensive Driving course Instructions Certificate (current);

Air Brake Instructors Certificate;

Drive Competency Assessment Credentials (current);

Class ABZ, license or provincial equivalent (the driving record shall meet the minimum standard set out by the Ministry of Transportation Recognized/Signing Authority Program) along with a clean Drivers Abstract;

Experience in the operation of non-licensed municipal equipment and heavy construction equipment;

Full understanding of CVOR, Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations;

Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Ability to work close and in a co-operative manner with employees and supervisors;

Project to employees and public an image consistent with the role of representative of the City;

Work in adverse training environment as required with the ability to counsel, facilitate and motivate all levels of staff;

Operate and demonstrate most fleet vehicles and equipment effectively;

Ability to perform all aspects of work assignments with specialized vehicles and equipment;

Facilitate learning in a classroom and on-site environment in a positive manner;

Use various software programs (ie: Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for training program development (tested);

Driver/Trainer and Presentation skills will be tested;

Oral, reading and writing fluency in English with the ability to prepare written reports;

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, diplomacy, discretion, tact along with experience in Customer Service and Marketing;

Promote driver safety by investigating vehicle related accidents and near misses and recommend remedial training based on analysis of accidents and near misses;

Verify employee’s Driver License’s and driver history through the Ministry of Transportation;

Capable of dealing with pass/fail outcome for testing/evaluations;

Must be able to work variable shifts in inclement weather, use of personal vehicle required;

Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Police Check) at candidates own expense.
