Position Summary

Perform all labour requirements in the horticultural team in the Greenhouse operation and upkeep, planting and subsequent aftercare of all Municipal horticultural displays, shrubs, and perennial beds maintenance, Urban Forest maintenance;

Responsible for training employees from other work areas to ensure the work assigned is done properly and efficiently;

Perform varied tasks and duties including labour requirements and operation and maintenance of equipment within the Public Works Department as needed;

Check lubricate, refuel and clean equipment within your care, and report malfunctions to the Assistant Supervisor;

Working safely and efficiently and be responsible for recognizing deficiencies or unsafe situations and condition and reporting same to Assistant Supervisor;

Work in spirit of team participation, while performing all duties of a horticulturalist within Public Works;

Understanding of all Public Works activities ;

Performs aspects of Winter Control Operations pertaining to the Horticulturalist position.

Qualifications, Competencies

Must possess a certificate and/or diploma in horticulture;

Minimum 3 years experience in horticulture and greenhouse operations, and/or possess the equivalent in education and experience in horticulture and greenhouse operations;

Must have a valid ‘G’ drivers license and satisfactory abstract with the ability to obtain and maintain a ‘DZ’ drivers license;

Basic quailty calculations testing will be done at time of interview;

Must have good and reasonable working knowledge of Public Works activities including equipment operations, related tasks and duties as well as Winter Control operations related to horticulture;

Must meet the requirements of “Competent Person” as defined in the Occupational Health & Safety Act;

Must demonstrate the corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Oriented, Integrity and Teamwork.

Must be in good physical condition to perform major strength and mobility demands of the position;

Ability to work outside in inclement weather conditions and perform all duties in a safe and efficient manner;

Ability to interact with the public in a polite manner;

Thorough knowledge and the ability to operate equipment and machinery in a safe and efficient manner;

Must be willing to work all and/or any shifts required;

Must be able to work in a team setting, yet independently without direct supervision;

Demonstrated ability to perform under stressful conditions;

Must be able to obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Police Check) at your own expense.
