Position Summary

Develop, coordinate and facilitate the delivery of inclusive municipal recreation and leisure programs and services;

Assess programs and services to determine level of inclusion/adaption available to persons with a disability;

Work with agencies serving persons with disabilities, seniors, adults, multicultural groups and newcomers to coordinate, facilitate and partner in the delivery of programs and services;

Work with agencies serving new residents and multicultural groups to include under-represented populations in recreation program and services;

Assist individuals with disabilities/families in selecting appropriate programs and/or level of support required through a leisure counselling assessment and referral process;

Implement formal and informal training opportunities for municipal staff and volunteers;

Develop and coordinate a volunteer support program for inclusive service delivery;

Recruit and train volunteers for municipal recreation program inclusion support;

Assist with the promotion/awareness of inclusive recreation programs and services for persons with disabilities, seniors, adults, multicultural groups and newcomers.

Qualifications, Competencies

Three year degree or diploma in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation or combination of experience and education;

Minimum 2 years experience working with persons with a disability, program development and supervision;

Experience working with multicultural groups and/or seniors associations is considered an asset;

Successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check);

Must demonstrate corporate competencies – Customer Focused, Results Oriented, Integrity and Teamwork.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

Program development, supervision (staff volunteer) management;

Ability to work with agencies serving persons with disabilities, multicultural groups, newcomers and seniors;

Ability to establish partnerships with community agencies;

Strong background in community development, facilitation & teamwork;

Excellent interpersonal, communication, public relations, and presentation skills as well as the ability to exercise sensitivity when serving persons from a variety of social, economic and cultural backgrounds with varying disabilities;

Knowledge and understanding of variety of disabilities and associated barriers;

Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution, mediation, staff training and education;

Working knowledge of risk management practices, policies and procedures in a municipal setting;

Program research, development, implementation and evaluation skills;

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook;

Must possess a valid ‘G’ licence and access to reliable transportation;

Ability to work flexible hours and attend meetings outside regular business hours;

Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated knowledge regarding the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act, Bill 118 (AODA, 2005) and the Human Rights Code;

Knowledge and skills attained through related experience and completion of a Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems course.
