Position Summary

Promote and enforce fire safety regulations as set out in relevant provincial legislation, municipal bylaws and within Division operating practices through comprehensive building inspections;

Develop, deliver and evaluate public education programs throughout the community and provide fire safety training to various client groups;

Assist the Fire Marshal, conducting post-fire investigations for the purpose of determining fire cause and origin;

Coordinate with fire suppression staff to develop and maintain emergency preplan information on designated occupancies;

Prepare highly detailed and accurate reports, documents, records and provide evidence before Court, initiates and participates in prosecution in connection with matters arising from the duties of a Fire Inspector;

Evaluate, recommend and approve Fire Safety plans, development proposals and application;

Qualifications, Competencies

Post-Secondary training in a relevant discipline and achieved designation as a technologist in the field of fire protection, fire sciences, engineering or architectural technology;

Completion of the Fire Prevention Officer Diploma Program of the Ontario Fire College;

Combination of education and experience acquired through seven or more years in a related occupation may be considered;

Extensive training and experience in conducting fire safety inspections;

Experience conducting building plan reviews;

Thorough knowledge of the Fire Service;

Firm working knowledge of all provincial legislation pertaining to fire protection and prevention in new and existing buildings;

Experience in development and delivering public education programs;

Must demonstrate the corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Oriented, Integrity and Teamwork.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position including walking, climbing, digging and lifting;

Ability to work outside in inclement weather conditions and perform all duties in a safe and efficient manner;

Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office and Firehouse software;

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with the public;

Possess and maintain a valid class ‘G’ Driver’s License with a satisfactory abstract;

Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory CPIC (Criminal Record Check) at candidates own expense;
NOTE* Salary Range $87,570 - $90.048 is based on 2011 Rate
