Position Summary

Looking for an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in policy research and data analysis? Look no further! As a Council Research Intern for the City of Kingston, you will have the chance to work closely with City Councillors and make a real impact in your community.

Under the guidance of the Manager of Intergovernmental Relations, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive research on a wide range of policy issues and developing databases to support decision-making. You'll also have the opportunity to monitor the latest legislative and governmental developments that affect the City, as well as keep up with local issues through social media and other media outlets.

In this role, you will have the chance to work on benchmarking studies, researching best practices and providing recommendations to the Council. You'll also have the chance to work on other related duties as assigned, giving you a broad range of experiences that will prepare you for a career in policy research and analysis.

Qualifications, Competencies

The City of Kingston is looking for a motivated and ambitious university student currently enrolled in a Masters of Public Administration program to take on this opportunity where you will gain practical experience and make a difference in your community.

As a Council Research Intern for the City of Kingston, you will have the chance to apply your academic knowledge to real-world policy research and analysis. To be considered for this position, you must be enrolled in and returning to full-time post-secondary studies in the fall of 2024, with verification required.

The ideal candidate will have experience researching a variety of information and topics, as well as analyzing data and working with databases. You will also possess excellent report writing skills, allowing you to communicate complex ideas and findings effectively.

It is also essential that you have knowledge of local government and a demonstrated commitment to Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity and Teamwork. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work closely with City Councillors and other professionals, contributing to a positive team environment and making a meaningful impact in your community.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled individual who can thrive both independently and as part of a team. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and advanced knowledge of MS Office applications.

As a Council Research Intern, you will be responsible for organizing and prioritizing tasks to ensure that all assignments are completed efficiently and effectively. You will also be required to exercise sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential information and to follow instructions and perform duties with limited direct supervision.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills and be a true team player, capable of working effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with tight deadlines. You will also have the ability to interpret and understand legislation, municipal by-laws, city policies and procedures, protocols, and related guidelines.

It is important to note that the successful candidate must obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check, demonstrating their commitment to ethical and professional conduct.
