Position Summary

To provide leadership and direction, while ensuring a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience for all users.


Head Guard responsibilities include:

Assist with overseeing aquatic staff during assigned shifts

Assist with on the job training, in-service training and mentoring of aquatic staff

Address patron and programming requirements

Perform opening and closing pool checks

Enforce all pool regulations and educating on their benefits and requirements

Assist with the planning of aquatic special events i.e. Drowning Prevention Week

Update and maintain contact with front desk and maintenance staff.

Take the lead in emergency procedures

Monitor recreational swimming activities, including: patrolling the pool deck and scanning the water, as well as monitoring patrons to ensure a safe swim environment

Wear the City’s assigned uniform, carry an aid at all times, perform emergency rescues

To the standard of the Head Guard’s certifications, respond to patron inquiries, resolve problems, and perform associated public education duties

Set up the pool deck prior to each shift

Assist maintenance staff with the cleaning of the change rooms and pool deck on a daily basis.

Attend all scheduled staff meetings and training programs

Recording all hours worked

Hold and maintain all awards at own expense

Perform other duties as assigned

Head Swim Instructor responsibilities include the items mentioned in the Head Guard responsibilities (above), in addition to:

Ensure instructor performance meets required standards

Mentor and co-instruct as required to maintain standards

Ensure all programs start on time, end on time and operate at a high standard

Ensure efficient and effective lessons transitions

Act as the resource and program lead for onsite instructional staff

Instruct assigned Red Cross or Lifesaving Society aquatic programs to standard

Respond to parent and participant questions promptly, courteously and thoroughly

Teach in the water for the majority of each class time when instructing

Prepare a detailed lesson plans for assigned classes

Write, proof and correct Progress Reports for lesson participants as required

Qualifications, Competencies

Completion of High School (Grade 12) graduation or equivalent in education;

National Lifeguard – Pool certification;

Lifesaving Society Instructor and/or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification;

Current Standard First Aid & CPR-C/AED;

Minimum of 12 month's experience as a lifeguard/instructor;

Knowledge of City of Kingston specific aquatic policies/procedures;

The following certifications are considered assets:
High Five (PHCD) – Principals of Healthy Child Development certification,
Lifesaving Society Instructor,
Bronze Examiner,
Water Safety Instructor Trainer,
Standard First Aid Instructor,
National Lifeguard Instructor;

Must demonstrate corporate competencies: Customer Focus, Results Orientation, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Skills, Abilities, Work Demands

Must obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal record check including vulnerable sector;

Must meet and maintain physical fitness levels required for National Lifeguard certification;

Various tests may be administered as part of the interview and selection process.
